Book Excerpt: 2002-2005 Honda VFR800 VTEC Repair Manual FUEL INJECTION SYSTEM FAULT DIAGNOSIS AND CHECKING
FAULT DIAGNOSIS If the fuel injection (FI) system diagnostic warning light on the instrument cluster illuminates when the motorcycle is running, a fault has occurred in the fuel injection/ignition system. The engine control module (ECM) will store the relevant fault code in its memory and this code can be read as follows using the self-diagnostic mode of the ECM. If the engine can be started, place the motorcycle on its sidestand, start the engine and allow it to idle while observing the warning light. If the engine cannot be started, remove the fairing (see Chapter 8) to gain access to the fuel injection system service check wiring connector (an open connector with green and brown wire to it), which is in the wiring harness on the right-hand side near the fusebox (see illustration). Ensure the ignition is switched off, then bridge the terminals of the service check connector with a jumper wire. With the terminals bridged, turn the ignition switch on and set the engine stop switch to RUN and observe the warning light.

STARTER MOTOR
REMOVAL
  1. Remove the seat (see Chapter 8). Disconnect the battery negative (-) lead. The starter motor is mounted on the front of the crankcase, to the right of the oil filter.
  2. Remove the fairing side and centre panels (see Chapter 8).
  3. Peel back the rubber terminal cover, then remove the nut securing the starter lead to the motor and detach the lead (see illustration).
  4. Unscrew the two bolts securing the starter motor to the crankcase then slide it out if the position and remove it from the machine.
  5. Remove the O-ring on the end of the starter motor and discard it as a new one must be used.

INSTALLATION
  1. Install a new O-ring on the end of the starter motor and ensure it is seated in its groove (see illustration). Apply a smear of engine oil to the O-ring to aid installation.
  2. Maneuver the motor into position and slide it into the crankcase. Ensure that the starter motor teeth mesh correctly with those of the starter idle/reduction gear then fit the mounting bolts and tighten them securely.
  3. Connect the starter lead to the motor and secure it with the nut. Make sure the rubber cover is correctly seated over the terminal.
  4. Connect the battery negative (-) lead and check the operation of the starter motor before installing the fairing panels (see Chapter 8).
