Book Excerpt: 1980-1983 Honda Civic CVCC Repair Manual

  1. The mainshaft can be completely dismantled after extracting the circlips. Check the bearings for wear, the teeth of the gears and the splines of the shaft for wear, the teeth of the gears and the splines of the shaft for wear or deformation.

If the shaft is scored it must be renewed together with any other faulty components.

  2. Begin reassembly by installing the sealing ring, the two circlips and the needle bearing, then the drive clutch (refer to paragraph 5, this Section, for complete dismantling) and the clutch thrust washer and thrust needle bearing.
  3. Follow with the collar, needle bearing and drive gear. Rotate the drive gear until the splines engage fully with the clutch discs. Install the thrust washers noting that the thicker one must be fitted with the shouldered side against the drive gear.

  4. Inspect the countershaft components for wear and damage and replace as necessary.
  5. Reassemble by fitting the needle bearing, the circlip, the countershaft drive gear and reverse hub, the latter having its recessed side towards the circlip.

  1. Examine the inside of the drum for signs of excessive scoring and cracks. Scoring or grooving may be removed by machining, provided that the internal diameter remains within the limits given in the Specifications.
  2. Measure the brake lining thickness. If it is below the limit given in the Specifications, discard the brake shoes and obtain new ones. Check that the linings have worn evenly.

Unequal wear indicates that one of the wheel cylinder positions is not moving freely. Check also that the linings are not damaged or contaminated. Linings should only be renewed in complete axle sets, even if not all are worn.

  3. Examine the wheel cylinder for signs of leakage and check that the pistons move freely.
  4. Check that the brake return and adjuster arm springs are not weak or damaged.
  5. Check the operation of the self-adjuster mechanism by setting it to the fully released position using a screwdriver and then marking the engaged ratchet teeth (Fig. 9.14).

Install the brake drum and spindle nut, and then depress the brake pedal and remove the brake drum. Check that the ratchet has moved, showing that the brakes have self-adjusted (Fig. 9.15).
