Book Excerpt: 1982-1994 Skyhawk, Cimarron, Cavalier, Firenza, 2000 Repair Manual

ENGINE AND ENGINE OVERHAUL

EXHAUST MANIFOLD | REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION

1.8L, 2.0L AND 2.2L OHV ENGINES (See Figures 35 and 36)

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Detach the oxygen sensor wire.
  3. Remove the serpentine belt or alternator drive belt.
  4. Remove the alternator-to-bracket bolts, and then support the alternator (with the wires attached) out of the way.
  5. For 1982-1984 vehicles equipped with the A.I.R. or pulse air system, disconnect the pipes and hoses.
  6. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  7. Unfasten the exhaust pipe-to-exhaust manifold bolts, and then carefully lower the vehicle.
  8. If necessary for access to remove the manifold, remove the oil fill tube and disconnect the heater outlet hose assembly nut from the exhaust manifold.
  9. Remove the exhaust manifold-to-cylinder head bolts.
  10. Detach the exhaust manifold from the exhaust pipe flange.
  11. Unfasten the retaining nuts, and then remove the exhaust manifold from the vehicle. Remove and discard the gasket(s).
  12. TO INSTALL

  13. Using a gasket scraper, carefully clean the gasket mounting surfaces.
  14. To install, use new gaskets and reverse the removal procedures. Tighten the exhaust manifold-to-cylinder head nuts to 3-12 ft. lbs. (4-16 Nm) and the bolts to 6-13 ft. lbs. (8-18 Nm).
  15. Start the engine and check for exhaust leaks.

CHASSIS ELECTRICAL
TEMPERATURE CONTROL CABLE

REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION
(See Figure 27)

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the right side sound insulator panel.
  3. If necessary for access, remove the instrument panel (I/P) compartment.
  4. Disconnect the cable at the module.
  5. Remove the control panel trim plate and control panel assembly, as outlined later in this section.
  6. Disconnect the cable from the control assembly, and then remove the cable.
  7. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure. Adjust temperature control cable, as outlined later in this section.

ADJUSTMENT (See Figure 28)

If the temperature control lever fails to move to full COLD or HOT, or a large amount of lever spring back is noticed when moving to either of the full positions, the cable clip may need adjustment.

Failure to grip clip in the correct manner will damage its ability to hold position on the cable. The temperature control cable must be replaced if clip retention fails.

  1. To adjust the clip, grip the clip (refer to the accompanying illustration for the correct manner to grip the cable) at module end of cable while pulling temperature control lever to the correct full position (COLD or HOT) and connect.
  2. Verify correct adjustment by observing for little or no spring back of the temperature control lever and listening for temperature door "slam" when the control lever is moved to full positions quickly.
