Book Excerpt: 1975-1983 Yamaha XT500, TT500, SR500 Repair and Service Manual ENGINE: GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The engine fitted to the Yamaha TT, XT and SR500 models is of the overhead camshaft type in which the valve gear is actuated by means of rockers that bear direct on the camshaft. The camshaft is driven by an endless chain which passes through the right-hand side of the cylinder barrel and head. All main castings are in aluminum alloy, to save weight. A few of the castings, such as the crankcase covers, are in magnesium alloy, which is even lighter in weight although more expensive to manufacture and machine. The crankshaft is of the built-up type consisting of two full flywheels and separate mainshafts, and running on two journal ball bearings of generous proportions. The connecting rod big-end is of the caged needle roller type, having eighteen 4mm rollers. The crankcase castings contain also the gearbox components and in consequence when attention is required to either the engine or the gearbox, the engine unit must be removed from the frame and the crankcases separated.

1978 Yamaha TT500

Above: Matt Andrews' 1978 Yamaha TT500 Flat Tracker. Built in about 30 days, all the bike needed was a tune-up, a carb rebuild, new points and condenser, and a new O-ring chain and kill switch (for good measure).
