Book Excerpt: 1976-1985 Yamaha XS750, XS850 Triples Repair Manual ENGINE, CLUTCH AND TRANSMISSION
ENGINE REASSEMBLY: REPLACING THE ATU AND CONTACT BREAKER ASSEMBLY
  1. Insert the ATU drive pin in the end of the crankshaft and position the timing unit, so that the drilling in the rear face engages with the pin. Place the complete contact breaker assembly mounting plate in the casing so that the wiring grommet locates with the relieved portion of the casing wall. If alignment marks were made on the stator plate and an adjacent part of the casing before dismantling was commenced, realign the marks and fit and tighten the three retaining screws. The static ignition timing is now correct. After assembly is complete, the timing should be checked using a stroboscope. Where alignment marks were not made, static timing and then stroboscopic timing should be carried out as described in Chapter 3, Section 7.
  2. Replace the engine turning hexagon and the center bolt which secures both it and the ATU.
  3. At this juncture in reassembly do not replace the contact breaker cover as access to the engine rotation hexagon is still required.

FUEL SYSTEM AND LUBRICATION
OIL PUMP: DISMANTLING, EXAMINATION AND REASSEMBLY
  1. The oil pump can removed from the engine while the engine is still in the frame. However, it will be necessary to detach the sump after draining the engine oil.
  2. The oil pump is retained by three screws and is located on two hollow dowels. On all but early models, one screw is obscured by the filter screen funnel mouth, which must be detached to gain access. The screen is retained by three screws and the cast funnel by two screws.
  3. After removal of the pump, unscrew the three housing cover screws and separate the cover, complete with the drive pinon and shaft, from the main body. Note the small drive pin which is a light push fit in the end of the driveshaft. Lift out both the inner and outer pump rotors.
  4. Since the oil pump must be cleaned, both the pressure release valve and the non-return valve should be removed from the pump body. Each is retained together with its tension spring by a backing washer and circlips. Using a round nosed tool, depress the spring and washer while removing the securing circlips. Release the pressure and remove the washer, spring and plunger.
  5. Wash all the pump components with gasoline and allow them to dry before carrying out an examination. Before partially reassembling the pump for various measurements to be carried out, check the casting for breakage or fracture, or scoring on the inside perimeter.
