TRANSMISSION Transmission symptoms sometimes are hard to distinguish from clutch symptoms. Common transmission problems are listed below. Refer to Chapter Seven for transmission service procedures. Prior to working on the transmission, make sure the clutch and gearshift linkage are operating correctly. DIFFICULTY SHIFTING

1. Damaged clutch system.
2. Incorrect oil viscosity.
3. Bent shift fork shaft.
4. Bent or damaged shift fork.
5. Worn gear dogs or slots.
6. Damaged shift drum grooves.

GEARS DISENGAGE

1. Loose or damaged shift drum stopper arm.
2. Bent or damaged shift fork(s).
3. Bent shift fork shaft(s).
4. Damaged shift drum grooves.
5. Worn gear dogs or slots.
6. Broken shift linkage return spring.

FUEL, EMISSION CONTROL AND EXHAUST SYSTEMS

FUEL TANK: REMOVAL/INSTALLATION

1. Verify that the ignition switch is OFF.
2. Use jack stands or a scissors jack to securely support the motorcycle on level ground.
3. Disconnect the negative battery lead.
4. Remove the seat as described in Chapter Thirteen.
5. Turn the fuel shutoff valve to the RES position (A, Figure 51), and remove the knob.
6. Disconnect the fuel hose (B, Figure 51) and the vacuum hose (C) from the fuel shutoff valve.
