ROUTINE MAINTENANCE AND SERVICING PROCEDURES

CRANKCASE BREATHER CAUTION: If the machine is continually ridden in wet conditions or at full throttle, the crankcase breather should be drained more frequently. It should also be checked after washing the scooter, or if it has fallen over.

1. Remove the storage compartment (see Chapter 9).
2. Check the condition of the hose between the breather chamber on the side of the valve cover on the engine and the air filter housing (see illustration). Make sure it is secure on its union at each end, and there are no cracks, splits or kinks in the hose. Replace the hose with a new one if necessary.
3. Check the drain hole cap(s) on the underside of the air filter cover for deposits. If necessary remove the cap(s) and allow any deposits to drain from the air filter housing.
4. From time to time remove the breather chamber from the valve cover and clean it out (see Chapter 2A or 2B).

LIQUID-COOLED FOUR-VALVE ENGINES (GTS, GTV AND GT MODELS)

MAJOR ENGINE REPAIR - GENERAL NOTE

1. It is not always easy to determine when or if an engine should be completely overhauled, as a number of factors must be considered.
2. High mileage is not necessarily an indication that an overhaul is needed, while low mileage, on the other hand, does not preclude the need for an overhaul. Frequency of servicing is probably the single most important consideration. An engine that has regular and frequent oil and filter changes, as well as other required maintenance, will most likely give many miles of reliable service. Conversely, a neglected engine, or one which has not been run-in properly, may require an overhaul very early in its life.
3. Exhaust smoke and excessive oil consumption are both indications that piston rings and/or valve guides are in need of attention, although make sure that the fault is not due to oil leakage.
4. If the engine is making obvious knocking or rumbling noises, the connecting rod and/or main bearings are probably at fault.
