The Unser Legacy: Four Generations of Speed
First they conquered Pikes Peak's "Race to the Clouds," then took on the illustrious Indy 500 and eventually prevailed there too. Through 80 years, four generations, and 14-plus drivers, the Unsers have always come out on top.
Between brothers Bobby and Al, and Al's son, Al Jr., this family holds nine Indy 500 crowns. But the Unsers' Brickyard legacy goes far beyond that record. Collectively, they hold seven Indy car season championships and 25-plus Pikes Peak victories. And even though Bobby, Al, and Al Jr. are now retired, the Unser legacy lives on. Third-generation drivers—Johnny. Robby. and Jeri, yes a woman driver—are still adding wins to the Unser record book, while fourth-generation driver Alfred "Just Al" Unser moves up the Indy car ranks.
Yet despite their successes, the Unsers haven't always triumphed. In The Unser Legacy: Four Generations of Speed, longtime motorsports journalist Gordon Kirby chronicles the hardest challenges they faced on their road to the top. Also included are several rare family photos that detail the Unser's lives both on and off the track.
