Book Excerpt: 1968-1982 Toyota Land Cruiser FJ40, FJ43, FJ45, FJ55 Repair Manual FUEL, EXHAUST AND EMISSION CONTROL SYSTEMS
GENERAL DESCRIPTION
  1. The carburetor used on very early Land Cruisers is a single barrel type incorporating a vented float chamber, low speed system, high speed system, accelerator pump system and a choke/fast idle system.
  2. Carburetors used on all later models are two-barrel types. In their main features, the carburetors are basically similar to the single barrel types, with an additional second barrel which permits greater volumes of mixtures to pass into the intake system at wider throttle openings.
  3. The two-barrel carburetor used on the F engines has its secondary barrel butterfly valve linked mechanically to the primary valve linkage. At primary valve openings in excess of 50 degrees, the secondary valve commences to open. To prevent over-rich mixtures during hard acceleration, an auxiliary high speed valve is incorporated upstream of the secondary valve; this opens when there is sufficient airflow through the secondary barrel and closes under the action of a counterweight at low airflows.
  4. The two-barrel carburetor used on 2F engines has a different method of operation for the secondary valve but is otherwise generally similar to the early type. The secondary valve is operated by a diaphragm mechanism which senses the venturi throat pressure drop valve to open by an amount proportional to this pressure drop. USA carburetors also incorporate an auxiliary acceleration pump which provides an additionally rich mixture during very heavy acceleration.
  5. The fuel pump used on all models is a mechanically operated diaphragm type which operates through a rocker arm from the engine camshaft. The pumps used on early engines have single inlet and outlet valves whereas those used on later ones have twin inlet and outlet valves.
  6. Different types of air cleaner have been used but most of them use a dry paper element. However, on some models, an oil bath air cleaner is used. For further information see Section 10.
  7. The exhaust system comprises a muffler, and the associated interconnecting pipes, mountings and clips.
  8. A wide variety of emission control systems are in service, the details of which will be found in Section 17 onwards.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
ALTERNATOR (CONVENTIONAL TYPE) | DISMANTLING, SERVICING AND REASSEMBLY
  1. Before dismantling an alternator, make sure that your reasons for doing so are valid. More harm than good can result from this type of job if the person doing it is not suitably qualified or experienced. Also, check the spare part availability before commencing any work because it may be less time - consuming and expensive to obtain an exchange assembly.
  2. To commence dismantling, remove the three through bolts and separate the front and rear frame assemblies. If necessary, a screwdriver can be used to pry apart the assemblies. If necessary, a screwdriver can be used to pry apart the assemblies, but take care that damage does not occur.
  3. Remove the nut and spring washer securing the pulley and fan.
  4. Using a suitable press or drift, carefully drive the rotor out of the drive end frame.
  5. Using a universal puller, draw off the bearing from the rear end of the shaft.
  6. Remove the front bearing end associated parts from the drive end frame.
  7. Remove the retaining nuts, washers and insulators, and remove the stator coil and rectifier holder.
  8. Remove the brush holder and rectifier holder from the stator coil. Take care during this, and any subsequent soldering operation that the minimum possible amount of heat is used, or damage will occur to the semi-conductors.
  9. Using a 10 mm (or similar size) socket and a vise, press out the brush holder assembly screws.
