TIMING BELT AND SPROCKETS | REMOVAL, INSPECTION, INSTALLATION REMOVAL (Refer to illustrations 7.13, 7.14a, 7.14b, 7.16, 7.19, 7.21, 7.23 and 7.25)
  1. Disconnect the cable from the negative terminal of the battery (see Chapter 5, Section 1).
  2. On 2004 and later Highlander models and all Lexus models, remove the top cowl/ventilation cover (see Chapter 11).
  3. On 2004 and later Highlander models and all Lexus, models, remove the windshield wiper arms and the windshield wiper motor (see Chapter 12).
  4. On 2004 and later Highlander models and all Lexus models, remove the lower cowl cover (see Chapter 12).
  5. Loosen the lug nuts on the right front wheel, but don't remove them yet.
  6. Raise the front of the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands. Apply the parking brake and block the rear wheels. Remove the right front wheel. WARNING: If the vehicle is equipped with electronically modulated air suspension, make sure that the height control switch is turned off.
  7. Remove the right front inner fender apron (see Chapter 11).
  8. Remove the engine splash shields from below the engine compartment (see illustration 6.3).
  9. Position the number one cylinder at TDC (see Section 3).
  10. Remove the drivebelts (see Chapter 1).
  11. Support the engine with a jack from below and remove the engine movement control rod and its bracket on the engine (see illustration 16.1f). Place a wood block on the jack head and do not place the jack directly under the oil pan drain plug.
  12. Remove the power steering pump and position it off to the side without disconnecting the fluid lines. Remove the power steering pump bracket.
  13. Remove the upper (number 2) timing belt cover and gasket (see illustration). Note: Unclip the wiring harness above the cover and push it back enough to remove the belt cover.

DRIVELINE
DIFFERENTIAL (4WD MODELS) | REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION
(Refer to illustration 5.6) WARNING: If the vehicle is equipped with electronically modulated air suspension, make sure that the height control switch is turned off.
  1. Raise the rear of the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands. Block the front wheels to prevent the vehicle from rolling. Place the transmission in Neutral with the parking brake off.
  2. Drain the differential lubricant (see Chapter 1).
  3. Remove the driveaxles from the differential (see Section 2).
  4. Mark the relationship of the driveshaft to the pinion flange, and then unbolt the driveshaft from the flange (see Section 4). Suspend the driveshaft with a piece of wire (don't let it hang by the center support bearing).
  5. Remove the rear exhaust pipe assembly (see Chapter 4).
  6. Support the differential with a floor jack. Remove the mounting bracket and differential mounting bolts (see illustration). Slowly lower the jack and remove the differential out from under the vehicle.
  7. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure. Tighten all fasteners to the torque values listed in this Chapter's Specifications. Fill the differential with the proper lubricant (see Chapter 1).
