Book Excerpt: 1969-1978 Toyota Hi-Lux Pick-up Repair Manual ENGINE
LUBRICATION SYSTEM, OIL PUMP AND FILTER
(HI-LUX 20R ENGINE)
  1. Pressure for the engine lubrication system is generated by a gear type oil pump located on the front end of the crankshaft just behind the crankshaft pulley.
  2. The pressurized oil is first passed through an externally mounted, cartridge type disposable oil filter, then to all the bearings and friction surfaces of the engine. Excess oil pressure is controlled by an integral relief valve within the pump. Oil pressure also actuates the timing chain tensioner.
  3. The oil pump normally has a very long life but in the event of low oil pressure being observed (not due to worn bearings or low oil level, remove the oil pump for servicing.
  4. Remove the sump and oil pick-up tube/strainer.
  5. Remove the drivebelts from the crankshaft pulley and withdraw the pulley.
  6. Unbolt and remove the oil pump. Pick out the sealing 'O'-ring.
  7. Withdraw the pump drive gear from the front end of the crankshaft.
  8. Unscrew and remove the relief valve components and then withdraw the inner and outer gears from the pump body.
  9. Clean and inspect all components for damage.

IGNITION SYSTEM
DISTRIBUTOR | REMOVAL AND OVERHAUL (20R ENGINE)
  1. The distributor on this type of engine is driven from a gear on the front end of the camshaft.
  2. Repeat the operations described in Section 7, paragraphs 1 to 7 inclusive.
  3. Remove the dustproof cover, vernier adjuster cap and withdraw the contact breaker points cover.
  4. Remove the LT terminal.
  5. Remove the contact breaker set and damping spring.
  6. Release the securing screw and withdraw the vacuum diaphragm unit.
  7. Extract the two rubber pads and unscrew the screws which hold the two cap clips.
  8. Remove the contact breaker plate with a pair of pliers.
  9. Disconnect the counterweight springs, noting their locations (use quick-drying paint to mark the ends of the springs and their respective anchors).
  10. Remove the 'E' clips and pull out the counterweights and bearings.
  11. Remove the lubrication felt pad from the top of the distributor shaft, remove the screw now exposed, and pull off the cam.
