ENGINE PERFORMANCE AND TUNE-UP
THROTTLE POSITION SENSOR | ADJUSTMENT
The Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) being used on the gasoline fuel injected Tempo/Topaz uses, a rotary tang to control the throttle shaft blade.
IMPORTANT: When removing or installing a TPS, be careful not to bend any of these tangs.
To test or adjust a TPS, a digital volt/ohmmeter is needed. Proceed as follows:
- Connect a suitable digital volt/ohmmeter to terminal A (output terminal) and terminal B (ground) of the TPS.
- Turn the ignition switch to the ON position and check the voltage reading at closed throttle. If the voltage reading is not 0.0-1.1 volts, loosen the TPS mounting screws and rotate the TPS until the correct voltage is obtained.
- If the correct TPS voltage cannot be obtained, replace the TPS.
- Slowly open the throttle and observe the digital volt/ohmmeter. The voltage should gradually increase to 4.0 volts at wide open throttle.
CHASSIS ELECTRICAL
HEATER CORE
Vehicles may be equipped with either a brass or aluminum heater core. All replacement cores are copper/brass. It is important to positively identify the type of core being used because aluminum cores use different heater core-to-heater core seals than the copper/brass cores. Having the proper seal is necessary for proper heating system performance.
Identification can be made by looking at one of the core tubes after one of the hoses has been disconnected. An aluminum core will have a colored tube. A brass core will have a brass colored tube.
If the vehicle is equipped with a copper/brass core, the old core seal may be used for the replacement core, providing that it is not damaged.
If the vehicle is equipped with an aluminum core, a new seal will be required for the replacement core.
REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION
(See Figures 15, 16 and 17)
NOTE: In some cases removal of the instrument panel may be helpful or necessary.
WITHOUT AIR CONDITIONING
- Disconnect the negative battery cable.
- Drain the coolant system.
- Disconnect the heat hoses from the core tubes at the firewall, inside the engine compartment. Plug the core tubes to prevent coolant spillage when the core is removed.
- Open the glove compartment. Remove the glove compartment and liner, by removing the retaining screws.
