Book Excerpt: 1981-1983 Suzuki GS650 Fours Repair Manual ENGINE
VALVE INSTALLATION
  1. Install the lower spring seat over the valve guide.
  2. Lubricate the lip on the new valve guide seal with engine oil. Use a 10 mm socket as a seal installing tool and position the seal over the end of the valve guide. Gently tap the seal into place. Ensure that the seal is seated squarely over the valve guide and is locked into place (Figure 72).
  3. Install the inner and outer valve springs. Note that the coils are closer together on the bottom end (toward cylinder head) of the springs (Figure 73). Ensure that the springs are installed correctly.
  4. Lubricate the valve stems with Bel-Ray Moly Lube or equivalent and install the valves in the head.
  5. Place the upper spring retainer over the valve springs. Install the spring compressor tool and tighten the compressor until the end of the valve is exposed enough to install the split keepers.
  6. Apply a small amount of grease to each keeper half and stick the keeper to a small screwdriver to aid installation. Install the split keepers on the valve stem and back off the spring compressor until the split keepers secure the valve mechanism.

MODEL IDENTIFICATION
Suzuki will often make modifications and improvements during a model year. The changes are generally minor; however, if you are performing repair work you will want to install the latest improved parts possible. It is important to keep a record of your engine number and frame number when ordering parts. The applicability of all improved parts is always referenced by the engine number and / or the frame number. The engine number is stamped on the top of the crankcase (Figure 87). The frame number is stamped on the steering head (Figure 88). When purchasing new parts, if possible always compare them to the old parts. If the parts are not alike, have the parts or service manager explain the difference to you.
