CHASSIS ELECTRICAL
EVAPORATOR CORE

Procedures for discharging and servicing the air conditioning system is described in Section 1. If a refrigerant recover/recycling machine is not available, this job should be performed at a dealer or a shop that has this equipment.

REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION
  1. Discharge the refrigerant from system.


  2. Disconnect the negative battery cable.


  3. Disconnect all evaporator/blower case attaching wiring including the blower motor ground wire to dash.


  4. Remove the accumulator.


  5. Tape or cap closed all refrigerant line openings.


  6. Remove all the attaching screws and stamped nuts from the evaporator/blower case.


  7. Remove the evaporator/blower assembly from the engine compartment.


  8. Remove the screws that secure the evaporator blower assembly halves together and remove the evaporator core.


  9. Reverse the removal procedures to install using new O rings on line fittings (coated with refrigerant oil).


  10. Evacuate charge and leak test system.

1980-1987 MODELS
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.


  2. Disconnect the electrical harness from the blower motor, resistor, pressure cycling switch and blower relay. Disconnect the heater core ground strap.


  3. Discharge refrigerant system.


  4. Disconnect the refrigerant line at the evaporator inlet pipe.


  5. Disconnect the compressor suction hose at the accumulator outlet pipe.


  6. NOTE: Tape all open lines to prevent moisture from entering A/C system.

  7. Remove the right end of the hood seal and remove the air inlet screen screws.


  8. Remove the case-to-dash bolts along the top, upper-to-lower case screws around flange, and upper to lower case screws inside air intake plenum.


  9. Remove the upper case by lifting straight up and off.


  10. Remove the accumulator pipe bracket to case screws.


  11. Remove the evaporator core by lifting core straight up and out of case.


  12. Replace sealer during reassembly to prevent air and water leaks.

  13. Install the evaporator core.


  14. Attach the accumulator pipe bracket to case.


  15. Install the upper case and tighten.


  16. Connect the right end of hood seal and air inlet screens.

MANUAL STEERING GEAR

ADJUSTMENTS

Steering gear adjustments consist of difficult preload adjustments that must be made with the gear off the vehicle. These adjustments are only made at time of rebuild. Once correct, they are not repeated to compensate for wear; rather, steering box problems must be corrected by rebuild.

REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION
  1. Disconnect the steering shaft coupling.


  2. Remove the Pitman arm using a puller after marking the arm-to-shaft relationship.


  3. Remove the steering gear-to-frame mounting bolts, then remove the steering gear.


  4. Reverse the removal steps to install the steering gear. Tighten the frame mounting bolts to 70 ft lbs. (95 Nm). Tighten the Pitman shaft nut to 180 ft lbs (244 Nm) and the steering coupling nuts to 20 ft lbs. (27 Nm).
