Quarter-Mile Chaos: Images of Drag Racing Mayhem
Drag racing is a violent yet beautiful sport. Occasionally things go wrong. Cars crash, catch fire, explode, blow engines, run over timing lights, lose wheels, and more.
Quarter-Mile Chaos reveals the treacherous side of drag racing—the fires, the danger, and the wreckage—through almost 240 rare and stunning photographs from the late 1960s through the early to mid 1970s.
Armed with just a couple of cameras and some film, and often unprotected by fences, guardrails, or walls, veteran drag racing photographer Steve Reyes roamed the hazardous strip in search of the perfect action photo.
Having to jump out of the way or duck was not uncommon for Reyes, but as he was ducking, he kept shooting. The results are incredibly dramatic and eye-catching photos that depict the demolition and devastation of drag racing's golden age.
