EMISSION CONTROLS
FUEL INJECTOR | OPERATION AND SERVICE
(See Fig. 72)

The fuel injector nozzle is an electromechanical device which meters and atomizes the fuel delivered to the engine. The injector valve body consists of a solenoid actuated pintle or needle valve assembly that sits on a fixed size orifice.

An electrical signal from the ECA activates the solenoid causing the pintle to move inward off its seat and allows fuel to flow through the orifice.

The fuel supply pressure is constant; therefore, fuel flow to the engine is controlled by how long the solenoid is energized.

The fuel injectors are mounted above the individual intake ports.

2.2L ENGINE (See Fig. 73)

1. Check fuel injector function as follows:
  1. With the engine warmed and idling, or cranking if it does not start, and using a mechanic’s stethoscope or equivalent, listen for regularly spaced operating sounds at each injector.

  2. If operating sounds can be heard, proceed to Step 4. If not, proceed to Step 2.

2. Check the fuel injector resistance as follows:
  1. Remove the electrical connector from the injector. If necessary, remove the injector from the engine to gain access to the injector terminals.

  2. Using a volt-ohmeter, check the resistance of each injector. The resistance should be 12-16? on the non-turbocharged engine, and 11-15? on the turbocharged engine.

  3. If the injector resistance is as specified, proceed to Step 3. If not, replace the faulty injectors and repeat Step 1.

3. Check the fuel injector electrical signal as follows:
  1. Disconnect the injector lead and insert the continuity checker from the fuel injector tester/cleaner tool 113-00001 or equivalent, into the injector lead plug.

  2. Start the engine.

  3. Observe whether the continuity checker blinks, indicating a completed circuit for the injector being tested.

  4. Repeat the check for each injector.

  5. If all the injector circuit leads show continuity, proceed to Step 4. If not, check for 12 volts at each injector lead and repair or replace as required.

CHASSIS ELECTRICAL
HEATER CORE | REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION
(See Figs. 2-4)
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Drain the cooling system into a suitable container.

  2. Remove the instrument panel assembly. Refer to Section 10.

  3. Disconnect the heater hoses from the heater core extension tubes and cap the extension tubes to prevent spilling coolant into the passenger compartment.

  4. On non-air conditioned vehicles, remove the main air duct from the vehicle.

  5. If equipped with air conditioning, remove the evaporator casing from the vehicle. Refer to the Evaporator Core removal and installation procedure in this Section.

  6. Remove the 3 heater case mounting nuts.

  7. If equipped with automatic temperature control, disconnect the electrical connectors from the function control and temperature blend actuator motors.

  8. Remove the heater case by pulling it straight out, being careful not to damage the extension tubes.

  9. Remove the 2 screws attaching the heater core tube braces to the heater case and remove the tube braces. Remove the heater core by pulling it straight out.

  10. TO INSTALL:

  11. Install the heater core in the heater case. Install the heater core tube braces and secure them with the screws.

  12. Position the heater case onto its mounting studs, being careful not to damage the heater core extension tubes. Install the 3 mounting nuts. (continued).
