CONVERTIBLE TOP DRIVE MOTOR, REMOVING AND INSTALLING

• Close convertible top half-way so that convertible top lid is at its highest point. Remove ignition key.
• Pull off drive motor plastic cover.
• Detach transmission cable on each side of motor: (see photo)
• Remove cable retaining clip (inset).
• Pull cable straight out of motor (see arrow).
CAUTION! Support convertible top lid while both cables are disconnected from motor.
• Remove motor mounting nuts (see arrows) and detach electrical connector (A).
• Slide motor off mounting studs.

Installation is reverse of removal. Keep in mind the following:

• Inspect motor mounting insulators and replace if necessary.
• When reconnecting left and right transmission cables, make sure convertible top and lid are square to body.

ENGINE PULLEYS AND SEALS

CRANKSHAFT SEALS REAR MAIN SEAL | REMOVING AND INSTALLING Rear main seal problems are frequently the cause of oil leaks. Periodically inspect the seam between engine and transmission bellhousing for signs of fresh oil drips.

• Disconnect negative (-) battery cable and cover battery terminal to keep cable from accidently contacting terminal.
CAUTION! Prior to disconnecting the battery, acquire the radio anti-theft code. Read the battery disconnection cautions in 00 Warnings and Cautions.
• Remove transmission. See 34 Manual Transmission or 37 Automatic Transmission.
• Manual transmission: Remove clutch. To avoid warping clutch pressure plate, loosen bolts in diagonal pattern and in several stages. See 30 Clutch.
• Lock flywheel or drive plate using Porsche special tool 9538/1. Remove flywheel or drive plate mounting bolts. Remove and set aside flywheel or drive plate.
CAUTION! Do not damage the crankshaft flange when removing and installing flywheel or drive plate. Do not use abrasive or polishing cloth or brush with metal bristles on sealing surface of crankshaft flange.
• Carefully pry out rear main seal.
• Alternatively, drill 3mm hole in face of rear main seal (see photo).
