Book Excerpt: 1964-1969 Porsche 911 Owners Workshop Repair Manual THE ENGINE
DESCRIPTION In September 1964, excited Porsche enthusiasts welcomed the introduction of a completely new engine design. This was a superb piece of engineering - a six-cylinder unit destined for the 1965 cars. It had the designation '2000', with a capacity of 1991 cc and a power output of 130 bhp at 6100 rev/min. After two years in this form, 1967 saw the production of an additional hotted-up version known as the '2000S' which was rated at 160 bhp at 6600 rev/min. A third, and milder, version was introduced in 1968, to be known as the '2000T' and rated at 110 bhp at 5800 rev/min. Car model designations used the same letters for identification, being known as 911, 911S and 911T, but an additional model called 911L indicates one with exhaust emission control and optional Sportomatic transmission, the engine being in the '2000' class. 911E and 911T Lux models have fuel-injection systems and self-leveling suspension. The cross-sectioned views of the engine in FIGS 1:1 and 1:2 show most of the outstanding features of this brilliant design and help to explain the reasons for the high power output. Six cylinders are arranged in two horizontally-opposed banks of three, each cylinder carrying its own aluminum head. The cylinders are of cast iron on the '2000T' but are of composite construction on the other models, the aluminum fins and barrels having a thin cast-iron bore to give excellent heat dissipation and a good wearing surface.

THE TRANSMISSION
6:2 ROUTINE MAINTENANCE Just forward of the ribbed differential cover on the left-hand side of the transmission housing there are two plugs. The lower one is a drain plug and the upper one is a filler plug. Drain the oil while it is hot, doing this every 6000 miles. Clean the magnetic drain plug free from adhering steel particles and refit it. Refill to the bottom of the filler plug hole with SAE.90 Hypoid transmission oil. Approximate capacity is 2.5 liters (4 1/2 Imp pints or 5 US pints). Tighten both plugs to a torque of 2 to 2 1/2 mkg (14 1/2 to 18 lb ft). Maintenance recommendations for the Sportomatic transmission are given in Section 6:16.
6:3 TRANSMISSION REMOVAL FOUR SPEED AND FIVE SPEED TRANSMISSION: To remove the complete power unit from the car, refer to Chapter 1. Note that the differential assembly may be removed without detaching the complete unit (see Sections 6:4 and 6:8), but if adjustment or renewal of parts is intended it is best to remove the entire power unit.
SPORTOMATIC TRANSMISSION: Use the removal instructions in Chapter 1 but note a few extra details. Remove the vacuum hose from the reservoir. Adjacent to the left hand bank of carburetors is the control valve. Withdraw the rubber cap, remove the split pin and pull off the wire connector (see FIG 6:29). Detach B+ cable from connector mounted just above coil and remove connectors from bypass switch. After lowering the power unit a little, detach cables from temperature switch and temperature gauge sensor which are adjacent to the vacuum servo cylinder (see FIG 6:30).

In addition to Porsche repair information, the manual also includes electrical wiring diagrams. Subject: 1964, 1965, 1966, 1967, 1968, 1969 Porsche 911 service, maintenance, repair. ISBN-10: 0837612152 | ISBN-13: 9780837612157 | Bentley H780
