REPLACING THE CRANKCASE ASSEMBLY IN THE FRAME
  1. It is convenient to replace the crankcase assembly in the frame at this stage, while the engine unit is still comparatively light in weight. Lift the engine/transmission unit into the frame from the right hand side. The kickstarter and the timing cover should be temporarily fitted for this operation.
  2. Allow the crankcase to rest on the bottom frame tubes and replace the two bolts which retain the engine plates to the upper frame cross-members at the rear of the transmission. The back bolt has a plain washer under its head and a split washer under the nut.
  3. Lever up the engine with a length of wood and replace the front engine plates. Attach the plates to the engine by inserting the bolts from the left hand side. Lower the engine unit and attach the plates to the frame.
  4. Replace the two, lower, rear engine plate bolts. Replace the front engine plate cover (if fitted) and tighten all 8 sets of nuts and bolts.
  5. The center-stand may now be replaced. Lever the spring onto its support inside the left hand engine plate. Note: after many years, the "eyes" of the stand and the frame support tend to wear extensively, as do the bottom of the frame tubes where the stand abuts the retaining bolts. If wear is extensive, bushing of the eyes/welding of the frame/replacement of the bolts should be considered as appropriate. Don't forget the bolts through the stand bolts to lock them in position.

TRANSMISSION
GEAR PINIONS, SELECTOR ARMS AND BEARINGS | EXAMINATION AND RENOVATION
  1. Examine each of the gear pinions to ensure that there are no chipped, rounded or broken teeth and that the dogs on the ends of the pinions are not rounded. Worn dogs are a frequent cause of jumping out of gear; renewal of the pinions concerned is the only effective remedy. Check that the inner splines are in good condition and the pinions are not slack on the shafts. Bushed pinions require special attention in this respect, since wear will cause them to rock. Make sure there is no damage to the case hardening of the transmission pinion teeth.
  2. Check both the layshaft and the mainshaft for worn splines, damaged threads and other points at which wear may occur, such as the extremities which pass through the bearings. If signs of binding or local overheating are evident, check both shafts for straightness.
  3. Examine the selector forks to ensure they are not twisted or badly worn. Wear at the fork end will immediately be obvious; check the arm in conjunction with the gear pinion groove with which it normally engages. Do not overlook the pin which engages with the camplate track; this is subject to wear.
  4. The three ball journal bearings should be washed out with gas, lightly oiled and examined for damaged ball tracks. Reject any bearing which has more that just perceptable side play, or is noisy or rough when rotated. Check the bush within the kickstarter spindle with the first gear in position so that the layshaft is in its normal running position. Renew if the layshaft has a slack fit.
