Book Excerpt: 1974-1978 Ford Mustang II Repair Manual

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
STARTER RELAY | REMOVAL AND REPLACEMENT
  1. For safety reasons, disconnect the battery.

  2. Make a note of and then disconnect the battery cables, ignition switch and coil wire from the relay (photo).

  3. Undo and remove the two screws that secure the relay to the wing apron and lift away the relay.

  4. Refitting the starter relay is the reverse sequence to removal.

FUSIBLE LINK | TESTING, REMOVAL AND REPLACEMENT
  1. A fusible link is used to protect the alternator from overload and is located in the wiring harness connecting the starter relay and 'BAT' terminal on the alternator.

  2. If it is suspected that the alternator is not charging, first check that the battery is fully charged and the terminals are clean.

  3. Using a voltmeter, check that there is voltage at the 'BAT' terminal at the rear of the alternator. No reading indicates that the fusible link has probably burned out. Check the fuse visually for swelling of the insulating sleeve.

  4. To fit a new fusible link disconnect the battery ground terminal first.

  5. Disconnect the fusible link eyelet terminal from the battery terminal of the starter relay.

  6. Cut the fusible link and the splice(s) from the wire(s) to which it is attached.

  7. Splice and solder the new fusible link to the wire from which the old link was cut. Protect the splice with insulation tape.

  8. Securely connect the eyelet terminal to the battery stud on the starter relay.

  9. Reconnect the battery ground terminal.

HEADLIGHT UNIT | REMOVAL AND REPLACEMENT
  1. Undo and remove the two screws that secure the headlight rim to the front wing. Lift away the headlight rim (photos).

  2. Remove the three screws that secure the sealed beam unit retaining ring to the adjusting (photo).

  3. Rotate the retaining ring so as to disengage the ring form the adjusting screws.

  4. Pull the sealed beam unit and disconnect the multi-pin connector to the rear of the sealed beam unit (photo).

  5. Lift away the sealed beam unit.

  6. Refitting is the reverse sequence to removal. It is recommended that whenever the sealed beam unit is changed the headlight alignment be checked. Further information will be found in Section 19.

HEADLIGHT ALIGNMENT
  1. It is always advisable to have the headlights aligned on proper optical beam setting equipment but if this is not available the following procedure may be used.

  2. Position the car on level ground 10 ft. in front of a dark wall or board. The wall or board must be at right-angles to the center line of the car.

  3. Draw a vertical line on the board or wall in line with the center line of the car.

  4. Bounce the car on its suspension to ensure correct settlement and then measure the height between the ground and the center of the headlights.

  5. Draw a horizontal line across the board or wall at this measured height. On this horizontal line mark a cross on either side of the vertical centerline, the distance between the center of the light unit and the center of the car.

  6. Remove the headlight rims and switch the headlights onto full beams.

  7. By careful adjusting of the horizontal and vertical adjusting screws on each light (see photo), align the centers of each beam onto the crosses which were previously marked on the horizontal line.
