Book Excerpt: 1964-1991 Mercruiser Stern Drive Repair Manual Type I, MR, Alpha, Bravo I and II Models 7-10 POWER STEERING
DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION The power steering system used with the MerCruiser Alpha and Bravo stern drive units is very similar to other power steering systems used on a wide variety of boats, with different stern drives and powerplants. Sometimes the unit is installed in reverse of what is shown in this chapter. This means the installation would appear as an opposite (mirror image), but the procedures for service will not differ. A hydraulic pump is mounted to the front of the engine on the port side. The pump is driven by a belt off the crankshaft pulley. Hydraulic lines connect the pump to an actuator valve and actuating cylinder mounted over the engine bell housing. A hydraulic reservoir tank is mounted to the engine above the pump. An oil cooler is connected to the system to prevent the hydraulic fluid from overheating.

HYDRAULIC PUMP The pump is a rotor vane type with a flow restriction orifice, a pressure relief valve, and a reservoir. The high pressure outlet fitting is of the molded type and capable of withstanding pressures in excess of 1100 psi (7500 kPa). This outlet fitting is located at the bottom rear of the pump and the low pressure return fitting is also at the back above the high pressure fitting. The low pressure hose is secured to the fitting with hose clamp. The clamp is adequate because the hose only carries fluid at low pressure.
