Book Excerpt: 1990-1999 Chevy Lumina, Olds Silhouette, Venture, Pontiac Trans Sport, Montana Repair Manual

ENGINE AND ENGINE OVERHAUL
TIMING CHAIN AND GEARS

The timing chain is a device used to keep the camshaft operating in synchronization with the crankshaft, and consequently, the stroke of the piston coincides with the opening and closing of the valves in their proper order. The camshaft gear is precision cut to be twice as large as the crankshaft gear. For each rotation of the camshaft gear, the crankshaft gear spins twice.

REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION | 3.1L ENGINE

NOTE: This procedure requires the use of a crankshaft sprocket removal tool, and a sprocket installation tool.
  1. Bring the engine to TDC on #1 cylinder.

  2. Disconnect the negative battery cable.

  3. Drain and recycle the engine coolant.

  4. Remove the right front tire and wheel.

  5. Remove the engine front cover, as outlined in this section.

  6. Align the timing marks on the cam and crankshaft sprockets. Use the alignment marks on the damper stamping or the cast alignment marks on the cylinder and case for reference.

  7. Place the #1 piston at top dead center with the marks on the camshaft and crankshaft sprockets aligned.

  8. Unfasten the camshaft sprocket bolt, and then remove the camshaft sprocket and chain.

  9. Lock the crankshaft to prevent it from turning, by freezing it with a prybar at the flywheel before attempting to remove the crank sprocket.

  10. Remove the crankshaft sprocket using a suitable sprocket removal tool.
BRAKE CALIPER
REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION
  1. Disconnect the negative cable.

  2. Remove the master cylinder reservoir cap, then remove the 2/3 of the fluid from the reservoir with a clean syringe and place it in a suitable container. Install the reservoir cap.

  3. Raise and safely support the vehicle with jackstands.

  4. Mark the relationship of the wheel to the hub and bearing assembly.

  5. Remove the tire and wheel assembly.

  6. Reinstall two of the lugs to retain the rotor.

  7. Push the pistons into the caliper bore to provide clearance between the linings and the rotor, as follows:

    1. Install a large C-clamp over the top of the caliper housing and against the back of the outboard shoe.

NOTE: If the C-clamp is tightened too far, the outboard shoe retaining spring will be deformed and require replacement.

    2. Slowly tighten the C-clamp until the pistons are pushed into the caliper bore enough to slide the caliper assembly off the rotor.

  8. If the caliper is going to be replaced or removed for overhaul, disconnect and plug the brake hose.
