ENGINE AND ENGINE OVERHAUL
VALVE STEM SEALS | REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION
(See Figures 100, 101, 102 and 103)
CYLINDER HEAD REMOVED FROM ENGINE
For the complete removal and installation procedure of the valve stem oil seals, please refer to the valve procedures earlier in this section.
CYLINDER HEAD INSTALLED ON ENGINE
NOTE: To perform this procedure a compressor and air hose with a spark plug hole adapter fitting is necessary.
- Remove the rocker arms, as described earlier in this section.
- With the air hose attached to the spark plug adapter tool and installed in the spark plug hole, apply 90-120 psi (620-827 kPa) air pressure to the cylinder. This amount of air pressure should hold the valves against their seats; if this does not hold the valves against their seats, the seats and/or valves should be machined.
- Use Spring Compressor Tool C-4682, or equivalent, to compress the valve springs only enough only enough to remove the spring keepers. Make sure to compress only the spring, not the valve stem itself. If the valve stem is pushed into the cylinder the air pressure will be lost and will need to be reapplied before commencing with the procedure.
- Once the spring keepers are removed, slowly release the compression on the valve spring. Remove the valve spring retainer and valve spring.
- Tie a piece of string or wrap a rubber band around the valve stem tip to prevent it from accidentally falling into the cylinder, which would require removal of the cylinder head to retrieve.
- Remove the old valve seal from the cylinder head with a pair of pliers or by gently prying side-to-side on the valve seal with a small pry tool. Make sure not to accidentally push the valve down.
NOTE: Since only one air hose is being used, only one cylinder can be serviced at one time.
DRIVE TRAIN
TRANSAXLE | REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION
1981-1988 VEHICLES (See Figure 63)
The automatic transaxle can be removed with the engine installed in the car, but the transaxle and torque converter must be removed as an assembly. Otherwise, the drive plate, pump bushing or oil seal could be damaged. The drive plate will not support a load no weight should be allowed to rest on the drive plate as the unit is removed; it must be fully disconnected from the converter before the transaxle is shifted out of its normal position.
- Disconnect the negative battery cable.
- Have someone apply the brakes and with the car still resting on the wheels, loosen the hub nut and the wheel nuts.
- Remove the axle end cotter pins and nut locks. Loosen the axle hub nuts.
- Raise and support the vehicle safely high enough to work comfortably.
NOTE: Raise the vehicle just high enough to work under the vehicle and inside the engine compartment.
- Remove both front wheel and tire assemblies.
- Remove the axle nuts and tire assemblies.
- Disconnect the throttle and shift linkage from the transaxle.
