Book Excerpt: 1983-1988 Kawasaki KDX200 Repair Manual PERIODIC MAINTENANCE
DRIVE CHAIN FREE PLAY INSPECTION The drive chain (Figure 23) must have adequate play so that the chain is not strung tight when the swing arm is horizontal. On the other hand, too much play may cause the chain to jump off the sprockets with potentially disastrous results. Set free play within the specifications listed in Table 11. When riding in mud and sand, dirt buildup will make the chain tighter. Recheck chain play and readjust as required. See Table 11.
  1. Place the bike on a stand so that the rear wheel clears the ground. Spin the wheel and check the chain for tightness at several spots. Check and adjust the chain at its tightest point.
  2. Lower the bike so that both wheels are on the ground and the bike is in a vertical position. There should not be a rider on the bike when performing this adjustment.

ENGINE TOP END
REED VALVE ASSEMBLY All models are equipped with a reed valve assembly (Figure 66) installed in the intact tract between the carburetor and crankcase. The reed is a thin, flexible one-way valve made of stainless steel or fiber material. The reed valve regulates the air/fuel mixture drawn from the carburetor into the crankcase. Particular care must be taken when handling and repairing the reed valve assembly. REMOVAL/INSTALLATION The reed valve can be removed with the cylinder removed or installed on the bike.
  1. If the reed valve is going to be removed with the cylinder installed on the bike, note the following:
    1. Wash the bike thoroughly before disassembly.

  2. Remove the carburetor.
  3. Remove the bolts securing the intake manifold (Figure 67) to the cylinder.
  4. Pull the reed cage assembly (Figure 68) out of the cylinder intake tract.
