Book Excerpt: Kawasaki KX80 1991-2000, KX85, KX85-II 2001-2016, KX100 1989-2016 Repair Manual ADJUSTMENT Perform minor adjustments at the throttle grip adjuster and major adjustments at the throttle cable adjuster attached to the carburetor cap.
  1. Open and release the throttle grip (Figure 34) with the handlebar pointed in different steering positions. In each position, the throttle should open and close smoothly. If the throttle cable binds or moves roughly in any position, inspect the cable for kinks, bends or other damage. Replace a damaged cable. If the cable moves smoothly and is not damaged, continue with Step 2.
  2. Slowly rotate the throttle grip until resistance is felt. Measure the throttle grip free play at the throttle grip flange. If resistance is noted as soon as the throttle grip rotates, there is not free play.
  3. If adjustment is necessary, slide the rubber cover away from the cable adjuster. Loosen the locknut (Figure 35) and turn the cable adjuster in or out to achieve a 2-3 mm (1/8 in.) free play measurement. Tighten the locknut.

AIR FILTER: REMOVAL, SERVICE, INSTALLATION
Frequent air filter inspection and service is a critical part of minimizing engine wear and maintaining engine performance. Never run the engine without a properly oiled and installed air filter element. Likewise, running the engine with a dry or damaged air filter element will allow unfiltered air to enter the engine. A well-oiled but dirty or plugged air filter will reduce the amount of air that enters the engine and cause a rich air/fuel mixture, resulting in poor engine starting, spark plug fouling and reduced engine performance. Figure 6 shows the amount of dirt that can pass through an improperly installed or damaged air filter.
