Book Excerpt: John Deere Tractor Repair Manual - Models: 6030, 3010, 3020, 4010, 4020, 5010, 5020, 3020, 4000, 4020, 4320, 4520, 4620 POWER STEERING SYSTEM OPERATION: ALL MODELS
The power steering system consists of the tractor hydraulic supply system described in paragraph 114, plus the steering control unit and steering cylinders or motor described in this section. (See Fig.JD8) The control unit contains a double acting piston (3) of approximately equal displacement to the two operating pistons (16). In addition, it contains two pressure valves, two return valves, a relief valve and an unloading valve which actuate the power assist. Series 5000 uses two, single acting displacement type steering cylinders; all other models use a steering motor, consisting of a main housing, steering spindle (17) and two rack-type double piston assemblies (16). When the control unit is in the neutral position, there is no fluid flow but oil at pump pressure is available at the pressure line (15). When the steering wheel is turned for a right-hand turn, the first movement of the steering shaft (1) and operating collar (5) causes the lower operating valve lever (7) to unseat the inlet valve (13) and return valve (12).
