Now this is one tricky subject, and one that certainly confuses a lot of people, and for no good reason.

Even though air conditioning technology may sound like rocket science, it certainly is something that anyone can learn, and thanks to the explanations provided by industry veterans Jack Chisenhall and Norman Davis, it becomes understandable.

So, if you're planning (or would like) to install an A/C system in your hot rod, this book, packed with color photos, takes you through the whole process. From planning to installation.

A 1930s Ford Coupe, an early pony car, a full-size American passenger car, and a 1960s pickup truck are covered in detail.

Book Excerpt

PLANNING THE AIR CONDITIONING:
Make Room for Everything

In the quest to install a properly functioning automotive A/C system in your car where none had been before, there are two things you can do that will make all the difference. They aren't that hard to do and don't cost any extra money, but will be worth a million later when driving your car.

Those two things are:
  1. Plan your installation.

  2. Mock-up the components in the car to make sure you have enough room to carry out your plan.
Planning may start as early as the day you buy your hot rod. Some cars just are tougher to air condition that others, even among Fords.

In the last chapter you read about the six basic components of an auto A/C system: cooling fan assembly, condenser, compressor, receiver/drier, evaporator assembly, and hoses and fittings. From this list you might assume, "If I have room for those somewhere in the car, then no problem. I'll get them in there real quick and then I'll be collected and cool."

Unfortunately, it's rarely that easy.

Why not? Remember the axiom, a chain is only as strong as its weakest link. As with every other system in your car, the result of your efforts is only as good as the weakest part. Each component depends, in some way, on some other part of the car.

This is where the value of proper planning becomes obvious.
