Hollywood TV and Movie Cars
Since the dawn of motion pictures, automobiles have played a major role on the big screen. Cars were mainly props in the silent film era, for actors like the Keystone Cops, who repeatedly fell off the paddy wagon. Over the years the roles of vehicles in film grew increasingly sophisticated. A major turning point came when James Bond's Aston Martin DB5 "with modifications" played a major role in 1964's Goldfinger. From that point forward, the automobile's role switched from prop to something akin to a character. Movies such as LeMans and Grand Prix showcased race cars. Chitty Chitty Bang Bang was a title character, and Bullitt was known more for the Mustang and Charger chase scene that its story.
Television, like motion pictures, featured cars and motorcycles in its shows as well. Just as in the movies, the cars of TV received marquee roles. The Green Hornet's "Black Beauty," Starsky and Hutch's Gran Torino, and The Dukes of Hazzard's General Lee are just a few of the vehicles that stole the spotlight from their human co-stars.
Hollywood TV and Movie Cars celebrates these wonderful cars, hot rods, and motorcycles, telling how they were created and revealing where they are today. Behind-the-cameras text accompanied by archival photos and movie stills describe the origins of the cars, stunt work, and the special effects that brought vehicles to life.
