Detach the cable from the negative battery terminal.
Remove the wing nut from the air cleaner housing cover, remove the cover and remove the filter element.
Detach the fresh air intake duct.
Clearly label and detach all vacuum and breather hoses from the air cleaner housing.
Remove the fasteners which secure the air cleaner housing to the carburetor and attach the air intake screen to the mouth of the carburetor. Remove the screen and the air cleaner housing. Stuff a rag down the mouth of the carburetor to prevent debris from entering it while the air cleaner is removed.
Installation is the reverse of removal.
SIDE-DRAFT CARBURETORS
Free the four clips around the outside edge of the air cleaner cover.
Detach the vacuum hose from the air control diaphragm.
Detach the fresh air duct from the air control diaphragm.
Unscrew the center wing bolt.
Detach the hot air tube from the underside of the snorkel.
SUSPENSION AND STEERING SYSTEMS
BALLJOINTS | REPLACEMENT
WARNING: Whenever any of the suspension or steering fasteners are loosened or removed, they must be inspected and, if necessary, replaced with new ones of the same part number or of original equipment quality and design.
Torque specifications must be followed for proper reassembly and component retention.
1979 THROUGH 1982 MODELS
If the balljoint is damaged or worn, the entire lower arm must be replaced, as the balljoint is not removable. Refer to Section 4 for the lower arm removal and installation procedure.
1983 AND LATER MODELS (FRONT), 1988 AND LATER MODELS (REAR)
UPPER BALLJOINT
If the upper balljoint is in need of replacement, separate the upper arm balljoint from the knuckle (following the procedure in Section 5 or 13), unbolt the balljoint from the arm and install a new one. Tighten the fasteners to the specified torque.
