COOLING SYSTEM
WATER PUMP | REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION
The water pump is mounted on the front face of the cylinder block and is driven by a belt from the crankshaft pulley which also drives the alternator.
To remove the water pump, drain the cooling system.
Slacken the alternator mounting and adjustment strap bolts, push the alternator in towards the engine and slip the drivebelt from the water pump pulley.
Unscrew and remove the water pump securing bolts.
Extract the water pump from the cylinder block. Part of the pump body passes between the timing belt cover. Once the pump has been removed and it has been found to be faulty, the only action is to discard it and fit a new pump.
Before refitting the pump, check that the 'O' ring seal is in good condition and not cracked or broken. Clean the joint faces of the pump and cylinder block.
Position the timing belt cover seal on the pump body and offer the pump into position (photo). Once the impeller has entered the pump housing in the cylinder block the pump can be slid into position.
Insert the four pump bolts and tighten to the specified torque.
Reconnect the drivebelt and adjust it, as described in the next Section.
On refilling the cooling system, check the pump for signs of leakage.
HONDAMATIC TRANSMISSION
HONDAMATIC TRANSMISSION | REASSEMBLY
Assemble the parking pawl mechanism and speed shift lever and install in the torque converter housing.
Install the speed selector linkarm, tighten the lockbolt to 7 to 10 lb f ft (1.0 to 1.4 kg fm) and bend up the tab of the lockplate.
Install the separator plate, dowel pin, pump gears and shaft.
Fit the torque converter check valve and spring in the valve body and then install the valve body to the torque converter housing tightening the securing bolts to 7 to 10 lb f ft (1.0 to 1.4 kg fm).
Attach the speed shift lever to the manual valve using the pin with a spacer in each side and finally securing it with the lockpin.
Insert the stator torque converter shaft.
Install the sealing ring guide and stop pin, tightening the guide bolts to 7 to 10 lb f ft (1.0 to 1.4 kgf m).
Install the servo body gasket, dowel pins and body itself. Tighten the body securing bolts to 7 to 10 lbf ft (1.0 to 1.4 kgf m). Make sure that the different length bolts are correctly positioned.
Install the oil pump strainer using a new 'O' ring seal.
Mesh the mainshaft and countershaft gears together, and then install both assemblies simultaneously.
Assemble the reverse selector gear to the shift fork (with the grooved side facing downwards) and install the assembly to the countershaft. Tighten the lockbolt to 7 to 10 lb. f ft. (1.0 to 1.4 kg fm) and bend up the tab of a new lockplate.
Install the counter reverse gear, needle bearing and the inner collar into the countershaft.
Locate a new gasket and then install the transmission housing to the torque converter housing taking care not to bend the oil pipe. Install the connecting bolts, tightening the smaller ones to 7 to 10 lb f ft (1.0 to 1.4 kg fm); the larger ones to 17 to 22 lb f ft (2.3 to 3.1 kg fm).
Install the bearing retainer to the transmission housing. Tighten the bolts to 9 lb f ft (1.3 kg fm) and stake the countermesh screw heads.
Bolt on the reverse idler shaft retainer, tighten the bolts to 7 to 10 lb f ft (1.0 to 1.4 kg fm).
