SERVICING ENGINE IN FRAME The following components can be serviced while the engine is mounted in the frame (the bike's frame is a great holding fixture for breaking loose stubborn bolts and nuts):

1. Camshaft assemblies.
2. Front cylinder head.
3. Rear cylinder head (1986-1989 only).
4. Clutch assembly.
5. External shift mechanism.
6. Alternator.
7. Pulse generator.
8. Carburetor assembly.
9. Starter motor.
10. Oil pump.

ENGINE | REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION One of the most important aspects of engine overhaul is removal and installation. Before removing the first bolt, collect a number of boxes, plastic bags and containers to have on hand so that you can identify and store the parts as they are removed. Have on hand a roll of masking tape and a permanent, waterproof marking pen to label each part or assembly as required. If the bike was purchased second hand, and it appears that some of the wiring may have been changed or replaced, label each electrical connection before disconnecting it.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

CRANKSHAFT PULSE GENERATOR RESISTANCE TEST In order to achieve accurate test results the pulse generator should be warm - at 20 degrees C (68 degrees F). If necessary use a hair dryer and warm the pulse generator coils.

1. Remove the seat as described in Chapter Thirteen.
2. Remove the lower side fairing panels as described in Chapter Thirteen.
3. On 1986-1989 models, perform the following:
1. Disconnect the 6-pin ignition pulse generator electrical connector containing 6 wires (one yellow, one white/yellow, one blue, one white/blue, and two black).
