Book Excerpt: 1996-2002 Honda CR80R, CR80RB Expert Repair Manual IGNITION SYSTEM
This chapter describes service procedures for the ignition system. Ignition system test specifications are in Table 1 and Table 2 at the end of the chapter.
COMPONENT TESTING Use an ohmmeter to test the ignition coil, exciter coil, ignition pulse generator, the engine stop switch and wiring. Figure 1 shows the location of the electrical components.
RESISTANCE AND PEAK VOLTAGE TESTING Compare test readings with the specifications in Table 1 to determine the condition of the part(s). Resistance and peak voltage tests are performed after disconnecting the component from the main wiring harness. It is not necessary to remove the part to test it; instead, locate its wiring connectors and disconnect them. When using an ohmmeter or the peak voltage tester in conjunction with a voltmeter, follow the manufacturer's instructions, while keeping the following guidelines in mind:
  1. Make sure the test leads are connected properly.
  2. Perform all resistance and peak voltage testing when the engine is cold (ambient temperature of 68 degrees F (20 degrees C).

ENGINE LOWER END
This chapter contains information on servicing the crankcase and crankshaft. Clutch, kick starter, primary drive and external shift mechanism components are covered in Chapter Six. Transmission service, other than removal and installation, is covered in Chapter Seven.
SERVICING ENGINE IN FRAME Many engine components can be serviced while the engine is mounted in the frame. The frame is a great holding fixture for servicing the following components, especially if a fastener is difficult to loosen.
  1. Cylinder head.
  2. Cylinder block.
  3. Piston.
  4. Carburetor.
  5. Reed valve.
  6. Flywheel and stator plate.
  7. Water pump.
  8. Clutch (Chapter Six).
  9. External shift mechanism (Chapter Six).
  10. Primary drive gear (Chapter Six).
  11. Kick starter (Chapter Six).
