German Military Equipment of World War 2
Originally issued as: Catalogue of Enemy Ordnance Materiel. Volume I—German Office of the Chief of Ordnance. Washington, D.C.
In June, 1942, the Ordnance Department organized the Ordnance Technical Intelligence Unit and in October, 1942, obtained authority to send groups of Ordnance Intelligence officers and enlisted men to the theaters for the purpose of collecting, selecting, and shipping enemy weapons to the United States.
Ordnance officers and enlisted men were selected and trained at Aberdeen Proving Ground and dispatched to all theaters where American troops were in contact with our enemies. As a result of this two-year effort, the department collected approximately 4,000 tons of enemy weapons, comprising more than 1,300 principal items.
In order to make the data on enemy weapons available to all Ordnance and other interested personnel, this book was assembled to cover the major German weapons. The principal characteristics of each weapon are given.
