Book Excerpt: Four-Stroke Motocross and Off-Road Performance Handbook HOW TO CLEAN YOUR AIR FILTER
TIME: 30 MINUTES (or a couple of hours if air-drying a filter) TOOLS: Sockets, ratchet, stand, clean rags, compressed air PARTS: Air filter cleaner, air filter oil Dirt and sand are major killers when it comes to dirtbike engines. That's why we put those great, big foam filters inside the airbox. However, there's another thing that dirt and sand kill over time: performance. Keeping your filter clean will help your engine produce maximum power with the smoothest delivery. Trying to suck air through a clogged filter will reduce your gas mileage, drop your horsepower significantly, and make your engine feel soggy. Why skimp on an easy chore, one that takes only half hour — mostly waiting for the filter to dry — when the benefits are so great? When it comes to cleaning filters, there are two schools of thought. One uses a solvent that you dip the filter in to cut the filter oil and float out the crud. The other (shown here) uses spray-on solvent. Although each method has its supporters, each method is equally valid. The same goes for spraying on or pouring on new filter oil. Most importantly, do not use gasoline or other solvents that are not specifically designed to clean air filters or you risk damaging the filter by degrading the glue used to hold multipart filters together. Similarly, you can actually swell the filter material, making the filter holes larger and less effective at stopping dirt. Simply out, use the right products for the job.
