WHEEL BEARINGS/DISC ROTOR | REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION

REAR WHEEL DRIVE
(See Figures 15 and 16).

1. Remove the caliper (pin type) or the caliper and support (sliding type).


NOTE: On the sliding type calipers, remove the caliper and support as a unit by unfastening the bolts holding it to the adapter (backing plate). Support the caliper with wire, do not allow the weight to be supported by the brake hose.


2. Pry off the dust cap. Tap out and discard the cotter pin. Remove the locknut.



3. Being careful not to drop the outer bearing, pull off the brake disc and wheel hub.



4. Remove the grease inside the wheel hub.



5. Using a brass drift, carefully drive the outer bearing race out of the hub.



6. Remove the inner bearing seal and bearing.



7. Check the bearings for wear or damage and replace them if necessary.



8. Coat the inner surface of the hub with grease.



9. Grease the outer surface of the bearing race and drift it into place in the hub.



10. Pack the inner and outer wheel bearings with grease (see Repacking).


NOTE: If the brake disc has been removed and/or replaced, tighten the retaining bolts to 25-29 ft. lbs.


11. Install the inner bearing in the hub. Being careful not to distort it, install the oil seal with its lip facing the bearing. Drive the seal on until its outer edge is even with the edge of the hub.



12. Installed the hub/disc assembly on the spindle, being careful not to damage the oil seal.



13. Install the outer bearing, washer and spindle nut. Next, refer to the following to adjust the bearing. (continued).
