This DIY repair and service manual by Haynes, covers 1990-1996 Chevy Lumina APV, Oldsmobile Silhouette, and Pontiac Trans Sport, all models.
Book Excerpt: 1990-1996 Chevy Lumina APV, Olds Silhouette, Pontiac Trans Sport Repair Manual GENERAL ENGINE OVERHAUL PROCEDURES
CAMSHAFT AND BALANCE SHAFT | INSTALLATION CAMSHAFT (Refer to illustration 24.1)
  1. Lubricate the camshaft bearing journals and cam lobes with moly-base grease or special camshaft lubricant (see illustration).
  2. Slide the camshaft into the engine. Support the cam near the block and be careful not to scrape or nick the bearings. Install the thrust plate and tighten the bolts to the torque listed in the Part A Specifications.
  3. Complete the installation of the timing chain and sprockets (3.1L engine - see Section 12 in Part B; 3800 engine - see Sec. 16 in Part C).
  4. BALANCE SHAFT (3800 ENGINE ONLY)
    (Refer to illustration 24.6)
  5. If the balance shaft timing was disturbed during engine repair, turn the camshaft so that with the camshaft sprocket temporarily installed, the timing mark is straight down.
  6. With the camshaft sprocket and the camshaft gear removed, turn the balance shaft so the timing mark on the gear points straight down.
  7. Align the marks on the balance shaft gear and the camshaft gear (see illustration) by turning the balance shaft.
  8. Install the timing chain and sprockets (see Sec. 16 in Part C).

REAR MAIN OIL SEAL | REPLACEMENT (Refer to illustration 25.3)
  1. Remove the engine/transaxle/subframe assembly and detach the engine from the transaxle, if not already done (see Section 5).
  2. Remove the driveplate (see Section 27).
  3. Pry out the old seal with a screwdriver or seal remover (see illustration). Make sure you don't nick, gouge or scratch the crankshaft surface with the tool.
  4. Clean the bore in the block and the seal contact surface on the crankshaft. Inspect the seal bore and the crankshaft surface for nicks, gouges or scratches. Even small imperfections on the crankshaft surface can damage the seal lip and cause oil leaks. If slight damage is evident, clean it up with crocus cloth. If the damage is too deep to clean up with crocus cloth, the crank will have to be remachined or replaced.
  5. A special tool is recommended for installing the new seal. Lubricate the lip of the new seal with grease or clean engine oil, then slide the seal onto the mandril until the dust lip bottoms squarely against the collar of the tool. NOTE: If the special tool isn't available, carefully work the seal over the crankshaft and tap it evenly into place with a hammer and punch.

SUSPENSION AND STEERING SYSTEMS
BALLJOINT | CHECK AND REPLACEMENT CHECK (Refer to illustrations 8.3a and 8.3b)
  1. Raise the front of the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands. Apply the parking brake and block the rear wheels to keep the vehicle from rolling off the jackstands.
  2. Visually inspect the rubber seal for damage, deterioration and leaking grease. If any of these conditions are noticed, the balljoint should be replaced.
  3. Place a large pry bar under the balljoint and attempt to push the balljoint up. Next, position the pry bar between the steering knuckle and control arm and pry down (see illustrations). If any movement is seen or felt during either of these checks, a worn-out balljoint is indicated.
  4. Have an assistant grasp the tire at the top and bottom and move the top of the tire in-and-out.
  5. Separate the control arm from the steering knuckle (see Section 5). Using your fingers (don't use pliers), try to twist the stud in the socket. If the stud turns, replace the balljoint.
