TUNE-UP AND ROUTINE MAINTENANCE
SPARK PLUG WIRE, DISTRIBUTOR CAP AND ROTOR CHECK AND REPLACEMENT
  1. The spark plug wires should be checked at the recommended intervals or whenever new spark plugs are installed.

  2. The wires should be inspected one at a time to prevent mixing up the order, which is essential for proper engine operation.

  3. Disconnect the plug wire from the spark plug. A removal tool can be used for this, or you can grab the rubber boot, twist slightly and then pull the wire free. Do not pull on the wire itself, only on the rubber boot.

  4. Check inside the boot for corrosion, which will look like a white, crusty powder (don't mistake the white dielectric grease used on some plug wire boots for corrosion).

  5. Now push the wire and boot back onto the end of the spark plug. It should be a tight fit on the plug end. If not, remove the wire and use a pair of pliers to carefully crimp the metal connector inside the wire boot until the fit is snug.

Repeat the procedure for the remaining plug wires (don't forget the cap-to-coil wire).

  6. Now, using a cloth, clean each wire along its entire length. Remove all built-up dirt and grease. As this is done, inspect for burned areas, cracks and any other form of damage.

Bend the wires in several places to ensure that the conductive material inside has not hardened.

  7. Check the wires at the distributor cap, making sure they are not loose and that the wires and boots are not cracked or damaged. If the wires appear to be damaged, replace them with new ones.

  8. A visual check of the spark plug wires can also be made. In a darkened garage (make sure there is ventilation), start the engine and look at each plug wire. Be careful not to come into contact with any moving engine parts.

If there is a break or fault in the wire, you will see arcing or a small spark at the damaged area.

  9. Turn the distributor cap screws counterclockwise to release the cap, then detach it along with the wires. Check the cap for cracks, carbon tracks and other damage.

MANUAL TRANSMISSION
SHIFT LEVER | REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION
(Refer to illustration 3.2)

4-SPEED TRANSMISSION
  1. Remove the floor console (if equipped) by removing the four screws. Remove the shift lever boot retainer.

  2. Raise the boot to gain access to the locknut on the shift lever and loosen the locknut (see illustration). Unscrew the upper part of the shift lever with the knob attached. Remove the foam insulator to gain access to the control assembly bolts.

  3. Remove the three bolts and detach the shift lever assembly.

  4. To disassemble the control housing, remove the clip. Caution: Do this carefully, as the component parts are under spring pressure.

  5. Remove the locknut, the boot retainer and the seat from the threaded end of the control lever.

  6. Remove the spring and guide from the forked end of the control lever.

  7. To assemble the control housing, reverse the procedure in Paragraphs 4, 5 and 6.

  8. Bolt the control assembly to the extension housing. Make sure that the fork at the lower end of the control lever has properly engaged the shifter shaft lever arm pin.

  9. Replace the foam insulator, the boot retainer and, where installed, the floor console.

  10. Slide the boot below the threaded part of the control lever, assemble the upper shift lever and tighten the locknut.
