ENGINE AND ENGINE REBUILDING
ENGINE FAN AND FAN DRIVE CLUTCH | REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION
(See Figure 80)
  1. Remove the fan shroud attaching screws.

  2. Loosen the fan belt(s). Remove bolts and washers attaching the fan drive clutch to the water pump hub. Remove the fan drive clutch and fan as an assembly, along with the shroud.

  3. Remove the attaching bolts and washers to separate the fan assembly from the fan drive clutch.

  4. TO INSTALL:

  5. Position the fan assembly on the drive clutch. Install the bolts and washers and tighten to 12-18 ft. lbs.

  6. Position the fan drive clutch, fan assembly and fan shroud, and fasten to the water pump hub. Install and tighten the clutch attaching bolts to 12-18 ft. lbs. for 1979-83 engines, or to 15-22 ft. lbs. for 1984-88 engines.

  7. Install the fan belt(s) and adjust to the proper tension.

  8. Install the fan shroud and adjust for equal fan-to-shroud clearance. Install and tighten the fan shroud screws.

ELECTRO-DRIVE COOLING FAN
Various models are equipped with a bracket-mounted electric cooling fan that replaces the conventional water pump mounted fan. Operation of the fan motor is dependent on engine coolant temperature and air conditioner compressor clutch engagement.

The fan will run only when the coolant temperature is approximately 221 degrees F or higher, or when the compressor clutch is engaged. The fan, motor and mount can be removed as an assembly after disconnecting the wiring harnesses and mounting bolts.

CAUTION: The cooling fan is automatic and may come on at any time without warning even if the ignition is switched off. To avoid possible injury, always disconnect the negative battery cable when working near the electric cooling fan.

SUSPENSION AND STEERING
COIL SPRINGS

WARNING: Always use extreme caution when working with coil springs. Make sure the vehicle is supported sufficiently.

REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION
(See Figures 16 thru 21)
  1. Raise the front of the vehicle and place safety stands under both sides of the jack pads, just behind the lower arms.

  2. Remove the wheel and tire assembly.

  3. Disconnect the stabilizer bar link from the lower arm.

  4. Remove the steering gear bolts, and move the steering gear out of the way.

  5. Disconnect the tie rod end from the steering spindle, using tie rod end remover tool 3290-C, or equivalent.

  6. Using spring compressor tool T82P-5310-A or equivalent, install one plate with the pivot ball seat down into the coils of the spring. Rotate the plate, so that it is fully seated into the lower suspension arm spring seat.

  7. Install the other plate with the pivot ball seat up into the coils of the spring. Insert the ball nut through the coils of the spring. Insert the ball nut through the coils of the spring, so it rests in the upper plate.
