How To Build an Old Skool Bobber: Build Your Own Bobber or Chopper - 2nd Edition |
This is my kind of teacher! Kevin Baas, a.k.a. "Teach," a guy who teaches Chopper building at a high school class. Where was he when I was in high school?
In this second edition of the popular How To Build an Old Skool Bobber, Kevin takes you through frames and chassis components, brakes, engines, transmissions and primary drives, explaining in each chapter, what to look for, and what to avoid when it comes to your build.
The engines section covers Panhead, Knucklehead, Shovelhead and Evo engines. The transmissions chapter helps you decide between a four-, five- or six-speed tranny. And it also discusses foot-shifters, kick-starters and more.
But a comprehensive Chopper book wouldn'te be complete without a chapter devoted to wiring, and Teach comes through for you with not one or two, but three complete chopper wiring diagrams!

Real Panheads are Great, but Expensive to Repair
To build a true vintage, old-skool looking Big Twin bike, a 45, Shovel, Panhead or Knucklehead would be the first choice. Since this is not an easy option for many, and the fact that they are becoming harder to find and much more expensive to pick up, there are alternatives.
The old-skool look can be achieved if you're using an Evolution or newer style motor from Harley or one of the many aftermarket motor manufacturers, as long as the rest of the bike follows the form and function of the vintage style.
Pans were, for years, the quintessential Chopper motor. As they (and we) get older, we're seeing more and more Shovels being used for the basis of many chops and customs. I am sure, as time goes on we will see Evos take their place in that line too, but not today.
