CARBURETION | FUEL, EXHAUST AND EMISSION CONTROL SYSTEMS
MANIFOLDS AND EXHAUST SYSTEM
Removal and refitting of the inlet and exhaust manifolds, and the induction header assembly (fuel injection), is straightforward, but certain models will have coolant hose connections to the inlet manifold, for the purpose of induction heating, and car interior heating.
Various electrical leads will need to be disconnected from their control switches and, in the case of carburetor engines, the complete air cleaner and carburetor will have to be removed.
Take particular note of the gaskets removed, as some of these should only be fitted a certain way round. They should always be installed to clean dry surfaces.
A sectional exhaust system is fitted, and incorporates a primary and secondary silencer. It will be necessary to jack up the car in order to remove either section of the exhaust system, and, where a fuel tank with a rigid center panel is fitted, take particular care not to damage the heat resistant material on the upper surface of the panel.
When installing new components, use new flange gaskets and clamps. Do not tighten the clamps fully until the complete system is installed and its suspended attitude checked for proximity to adjacent suspension and bodywork components.
Refer to Fig. 3.54. It is imperative that the exhaust mounting bracket at the rear of the transmission unit is assembled free of stresses, otherwise resonance can occur when the car is running.

DISTRIBUTOR | OVERHAUL
Before attempting to dismantle a worn or faulty distributor, check with your local auto electrician that spares are available, as it may be more economical to obtain a new, reconditioned, or good secondhand assembly.
Remove the distributor as described in Section 5.
Withdraw the cap, rotor arm, and contact breaker set.
Carefully pry the vacuum capsule link rod retaining circlip away from the pivot, and remove it.
Remove the vacuum capsule securing screws, tilt the capsule slightly, to disengage the link rod from the pivot, and withdraw the capsule.
Unscrew the base plate securing screws, and lift it out of the distributor body. Note the position of the cam.
Using two screwdrivers inserted under the cam as levers, pry the distributor shaft upwards, until the spring retaining ring disengages.
Leave the felt lubrication pad in position during this operation, as the retaining ring may be ejected from the top of the distributor shaft.
Secure the distributor in a soft jaw vice, and drill out the pin which secures the driven gear to the shaft. A drill of 0.118 in (3.0 mm) is suitable for this operation.
