Book Excerpt: 1993-2005 BMW R850, R1100, R1150, R1200C Repair Manual ENGINE COMPRESSION TEST
A cranking compression test is a quick way to check the internal condition of the engine (piston rings, pistons, head gasket, valves and cylinders). It is a good idea to check compression at each tune-up, record it in the maintenance log at the end of this manual and compare it with subsequent readings. Use the spark plug tool included in the motorcycle's tool kit and screw-in compression gauge with a flexible adapter. Before using the gauge, check that the rubber gasket on the end of the adapter is not cracked or damaged; this gasket seals the cylinder to ensure accurate compression readings. NOTE: Make sure the socket used to remove the spark plugs is equipped with a rubber insert that secures the spark plug. This type of socket is included in the standard tool kit and is necessary for both removal and installation, since the spark plugs are located in the cylinder head receptacles. It is not possible to remove or install the spark plugs by hand.
  1. Make sure the battery is fully charged to ensure proper engine cranking speed.
  2. Run the engine until it reaches normal operating temperature, then turn it off.
