Book Excerpt: 1998-2003 Aprilia RSV 1000 Mille, RSV-R Repair Manual ENGINE, CLUTCH AND TRANSMISSION
CAM CHAIN TENSIONERS AND BLADES Note: The cam chain tensioners can be removed with the engine in the frame. If the engine has been removed, ignore the steps that do not apply. TENSIONERS REMOVAL
  1. Set the cylinder being worked on at TDC on its compression stroke before removing a tensioner, and remove only one tensioner at a time - turning the engine with one removed to align it for removal of the other could cause the slack chain to jump on its sprocket. Remove the valve cover(s) (see Section 7), and the crankshaft end cap from the alternator cover (see illustration 8.3). Turn the engine in an anti-clockwise direction to align the timing marks (see Section 8, Step 5 for the front cylinder marks, and Step 16 for the rear cylinder marks).
  2. Unscrew the tensioner cap bolt and remove the sealing washer (see illustration).
  3. Withdraw the tensioner cap bolt and remove the sealing washer (see illustration).
  4. Discard the sealing washer as a new one must be used on installation.
  5. INSPECTION
  6. Examine the tensioner components for signs of wear and damage. Measure the internal diameter of the tensioner bore in the cylinder block using a small bore gauge and micrometer, and measure the diameter of the tensioner piston. Subtract one from the other to obtain the clearance. If the result is greater than the limit specified replace the tensioner with a new one assuming the bore diameter is within limits.

FUEL, ENGINE MANAGEMENT AND EXHAUST SYSTEMS
FAST IDLE SYSTEM CABLE REMOVAL
  1. Remove the air filter housing (see Section 8).
  2. Loosen the outer locknut on the fast idle cable adjuster, and then thread the inner locknut off the end (see illustrations). Disconnect the cable end from the arm and draw the cable out of its bracket (see illustration).
  3. Remove the two handlebar switch housing screws and separate the halves (see illustrations). Note how the pin on the bottom half of the housing locates in the hole in the handlebar.
  4. Undo the two cable housing screws and draw the housing away from the clutch master cylinder (see illustration). Detach the housing cover by carefully releasing the two sets of tabs from the inner side (see illustrations). Release the cable end from the lever and free the cable elbow from the housing (see illustrations).
  5. Remove the cable from the machine, noting its routing.
