ENGINE AND ENGINE OVERHAUL
IGNITER | ON-VEHICLE INSPECTION

AMIGO, PICKUP, TROOPER II, RODEO
(WITH 4ZD1 AND 4ZE1 ENGINES ONLY)
  1. Remove the distributor cap.


  2. Disconnect the ignition coil high tension cable at the distributor side. Move the high tension cable end to the coil fixing screw and maintain a 5mm clearance.


  3. Place the ignition switch to the ON position.


  4. Connect a 1.5 volt dry cell to the red igniter wiring terminal at the positive (+) side and the white wiring terminal at the negative (-) side.


  5. NOTE: Do not apply voltage to the igniter for more than three seconds at a time to avoid destroying the power transistor in the igniter.

  6. The igniter is normal when sparks are generated between the high tension cable and ground when one connected wiring (or probe) is disconnected.


  7. If the igniter fails this test (no sparks), replace it.


  8. Reconnect all disconnected wiring and install all removed parts.

REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION
G180Z, G200Z ENGINES
  1. Disconnect the negative (-) battery cable.


  2. Remove the distributor cap, seal and rotor.


  3. Remove the igniter cover and igniter assembly.
TO INSTALL
  1. Install the igniter and adjust the gap between the pick-up coil and coil projections with a feeler gauge. The measurement should be between 0.008-0.016 in. (0.2-0.4 mm).


  2. Install the igniter cover, rotor, seal and cap.


  3. Connect the battery cable and check operation.
4ZD1 AND 4ZE1 ENGINES
  1. Disconnect the negative (-) battery cable.


  2. Remove the distributor cap, rotor and seal.


  3. Remove the vacuum control screw and vacuum advance canister.


  4. Disconnect the wiring harness.


  5. Remove the retractor (pole piece). Pry loose the retractor outer cover, insert a suitable pry bar into the lower side of the retractor and pull free.

DRIVE TRAIN
AXLE HOUSING | REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION
  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle.


  2. Match mark and disconnect the front driveshaft from the differential.


  3. Remove the wheels and skid plate.


  4. Loosen the torsion bar completely with the height control adjusting bolts.


  5. Remove the strut bars.


  6. Disconnect the stabilizer bars from the lower control arms.


  7. Remove the caliper assemblies and suspend them on a wire; do not disconnect the brake lines.


  8. Remove the tie rod ends from the steering knuckles.


  9. Disconnect the upper control arms from the frame; note the number and positions of the shims.


  10. Remove the steering link ends from the lower control arms.


  11. Disconnect the shock absorbers from the lower control arms.


  12. Disconnect the lower control arms from the frame.


  13. Remove the locking hub.


  14. Remove the rotors and upper links.
