Book Excerpt: 1965-1989 Porsche 911 Repair Manual THE PORSCHE 911 IS A CAR OF ITS OWN IN THE WORLD OF THE SPORTING MOTORIST
Originally produced as a Coupe of 2 liter engine capacity, it was a natural successor to the Type 356, which itself started life as a Porsche designed body assembled mainly around standard Volkswagen components with a modified VW Beetle type engine. Although not differing greatly in body style, the 911 model, introduced in September 1964, was a very different car mechanically. A new rear-mounted, flat-six, dry-sump engine was introduced, with carburetion by a triple choke Solex carburetor for each cylinder bank. Power was transmitted through a conventional diaphragm spring clutch to a 5-speed transaxle which drove the rear wheels through twin driveshafts. The result was an outstanding 130 mph plus sports coupe. Subsequent development brought about both de-rated and up-rated versions, replacement of the Solex carburetors by Webers, the introduction of the Bosch plunger pump fuel injection system, and later the intake-airflow-controlled K-jetronic injection system. Concurrently there were minor transmission modifications, and in August 1971 a new transmission was introduced for the 1972 models. Meanwhile, the semi-automatic Sportomatic transmission had been introduced, which also underwent considerable modification for 1972.

MANUAL TRANSMISSION
FIVE-SPEED TRANSMISSION (LATER TYPE) | DISMANTLING INTO MAJOR ASSEMBLIES, AND REASSEMBLY NOTE: It must be appreciated that adjustment of the shift forks on this type of transmission is not straightforward. It is recommended that paragraph 15 of this Section, and all of Section 17 is read before any dismantling is commenced.
  1. Initially proceed as described in paragraph 1, 2 and 3 of Section 3.
  2. NOTE: The transmission final drive housing is manufactured from magnesium alloy. Take care that any cleaning solvents are non-corrosive to this type of material.
  3. Remove the transmission front cover.
  4. Remove the cover and guide fork from the gear housing.
  5. Select 5th gear using the shift rod, then move the selector fork to also select 1st, 2nd, 3rd or 4th gear to lock-up the transmission.
  6. Remove the roll pin and castellated nut from the input shaft.
  7. Remove the flange nut from the pinion shaft.
  8. Remove the roll pin, then take out the bolt and take off the 5th/reverse shift fork.
