ENGINE AND ENGINE OVERHAUL
TIMING BELT/CHAIN AND TENSIONER
REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION | EXCEPT VG ENGINES
(See Figures 160, 161 and 162)
- Before beginning any disassembly procedure, position the No. 1 cylinder at TDC (Top Dead Center) on the compression stroke.
- Remove the front cover and the rocker arm cover.
- With the No. 1 cylinder at TDC, the timing marks on the camshaft sprocket and the timing chain should be visible. Mark both of them with paint. Also mark the relationship of the camshaft sprocket to the camshaft.
At this point you will see that there are three sets of timing marks and locating holes in the sprocket. They are for making adjustments to compensate for the timing chain stretch.
NOTE: When timing chain adjustment is required, refer to the Timing Chain adjustment procedures in this section for details.
- With the timing marks on the cam sprocket clearly marked, locate and mark the timing marks on the crankshaft sprocket. Also mark the chain timing mark.
- Unbolt the camshaft sprocket and remove the sprocket along with the chain. When removing the chain, hold it where the chain tensioner contacts it. When the chain is removed, the tensioner is going to come apart. Hold on to it and you won’t lose any of the parts.
NOTE: The crankshaft sprocket can be removed with a puller, if necessary. There is no need to remove the chain guide unless it is being replaced.
- To install the timing chain and the camshaft sprocket together, after first positioning the chain over the crankshaft sprocket, perform the following:
- Position the sprocket so that the marks made earlier line up (undisturbed engine). The camshaft and the crankshaft keys should both be pointing upward.
- If a new chain and/or gear is being installed, position the sprocket so that the timing marks on the chain align with the marks on the sprocket (both keys pointing up); the marks are on the right-hand side of the sprockets as you face the engine.
- When the chain is installed correctly, there will be 42 links between the mating marks of the chain and sprockets (1970-1978). (continued)...
CHASSIS ELECTRICAL
ADD-ON ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENT
The electrical system in your vehicle is designed to perform under reasonable operating conditions without interference between components. Before any additional electrical equipment is installed, it is recommended that you consult your dealer or a reputable repair facility that is familiar with the vehicle and its systems.
If the vehicle is equipped with mobile radio equipment and/or mobile telephone, it may have an effect upon the operation of any on-board computer control modules. Radio Frequency Interference (RFI) from the communications system can be picked up by the vehicle’s wiring harnesses and conducted into the control module, giving it the wrong messages at the wrong time.
Although well-shielded against RFI, the computer should be further protected by taking the following precautions:
Install the antenna as far as possible from the control module. For instance, if the module is located behind the center console area, then the antenna should be mounted at the rear of the vehicle.
Keep the antenna wiring a minimum of eight inches away from any wire running to control modules and from the module itself. NEVER wind the antenna wire around any other wiring.
Mount the equipment as far from the control module as possible. Be very careful during installation not to drill through any wires or short a wire harness with a mounting screw.
Insure that the electrical feed wire(s) to the equipment are properly and tightly connected. Loose connectors can cause interference.
Make certain that the equipment is properly grounded to the vehicle. Poor grounding can damage expensive equipment.
