ENGINE AND ENGINE OVERHAUL
DISTRIBUTOR | REMOVAL
(See Figure 3)
- Unfasten the retaining clips and lift the distributor cap straight up. It will be easier to install the distributor if the wiring is not disconnected from the cap. If the wires must be removed from the cap, mark their positions to aid in installation.
- Disconnect the distributor wiring harness. On models with the reluctor, the wiring must be disconnected from the reluctor itself and the grommet pulled out of the side of the distributor body. On the latest models, with the crank angle sensor, disconnect the harness at the multipronged plug.
- Disconnect the vacuum lines from the vacuum advance/retard mechanisms, if there are any.
- Note the position of the rotor in relation to the base. Scribe or paint a mark on the base of the distributor and on the engine block so the marks can be lined up for reinstallation. Align the marks with the direction the metal tip of the rotor is pointing.
- Remove the bolt(s) which hold(s) the distributor to the engine.
- Lift the distributor assembly form the engine on the A-series engines. On Sentra, pull the distributor straight out from the end of the head.
INSTALLATION | ENGINE NOT DISTURBED
- Lightly lubricate the distributor shaft with engine oil and insert the shaft and assembly into the engine. Line up the mark on the distributor and the one on the engine with the metal tip of the rotor.
Make sure that the vacuum advance diaphragm is pointed in the same direction as it was pointed originally. This will be done automatically if the marks on the engine and the distributor are lined up with the rotor.
- Install the distributor hold-down bolt and clamp. Leave the bolt loose enough so that you can turn the distributor with a slight amount of effort.
- Connect the primary wire to the coil or reconnect the electrical connector. Install the distributor cap on the distributor housing. Secure the distributor cap with the spring clips.
FUEL SYSTEM
BASIC FUEL SYSTEM DIAGNOSIS
When there is a problem starting or driving a vehicle, two of the most important checks involve the ignition and the fuel systems. The questions most mechanics attempt to answer first, 'is there spark?" and "is there fuel?" will often lead to solving most basic problems.
For ignition system diagnosis and testing, please refer to the information on engine electrical components and ignition system found earlier in this manual. If the ignition system checks out (there is spark), then you must determine if the fuel system is operating properly (is there fuel?).
CARBURETED FUEL SYSTEM | MECHANICAL FUEL PUMP
(See Figure 1)
The fuel pump is a mechanically operated diaphragm-type pump driven by the fuel pump eccentric on the camshaft. It is mounted on the side of the engine block.
Design of the fuel pump permits disassembly, cleaning, and repair or replacement of defective parts on models through 1981.
REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION
- Disconnect the two fuel lines from the fuel pump. Be sure to keep the line leading from the fuel tamp up high to prevent the excess loss of fuel.
- Remove the two fuel pump mounting nuts and remove the fuel pump assembly from the side of the engine.
- Install the fuel pump in the reverse order of removal, using a new gasket and sealer on the mating surface.
TESTING | PRESSURE
- Disconnect the line between the carburetor and the pump at the carburetor.
- Connect a rubber hose to each open end of the T-connector, and connect his connector-hose assembly between carburetor and fuel pump.
